Dr. Stelios Kyriakides earned his Ph.D. in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology in 1980. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin that same year. In 2007, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, the nation’s highest engineering honor. He is director of the Center for Research in Mechanics of Solids, Structures and Materials.
Kyriakides conducts experimental and analytical research to understand the behavior of solid materials and structures, concentrating on the causes of instabilities in the materials at the structural, micro and nano scales. For example, he studied plastic buckling and crushing of structures such as offshore pipelines and other tubulars used in the oil and gas industry. He researched problems with forming materials in manufacturing of automotive and other metal components, and researched the inelastic behavior and failure of materials such as fiber composites, shape memory alloys and cellular materials such as foams, honeycombs and wood.
Research interests:
- Instability in solids, structures and materials
- Solid mechanics
- Composite materials
- Plasticity
