Dr. Sheldon Landsberger earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering and applied chemistry from the University of Toronto, Canada, in 1982. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 1997. He is coordinator for the Nuclear and Radiation Engineering program and directs the Nuclear Engineering Teaching Laboratory.
Landsberger uses nuclear analytical methods to study the determination of
heavy metals in environmental samples. He has had many years of experience in
analyzing air samples from the Arctic, Great Lakes, and other urban and rural
areas. He developed improved nuclear techniques to determine the elements of
critical importance in identifying regional sources of airborne particles, and
characterizing solid waste leaching dynamics. He currently researches low-level
counting of natural radioactivity, corrosion studies and risk assessment in
radioactivity handling.
Research Interests:
- Radioactive and solid waste management
- Low-level counting of natural radioactivity
- Compton suppression gamma-ray spectrometry
- Risk assessment in radioactivity handling
