Dr. Joseph Malina, Jr. earned his Ph.D. in civil and sanitary engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1961 and joined the Cockrell School of Engineering later that year. He currently holds the C.W. Cook Professorship in Environmental Engineering, and received the Life-Time Achievement Award from the Water Environment Association of Texas and Water Environment Federation in 2006.

Dr. Malina researches the management and treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater, sludge and solid wastes. He also studies the environmental impact of contaminated runoff from bridges and highways. He was project director of an award-winning experiment in which a machine dumped “rainfall” on a 1,000-foot portion of Mopac Boulevard in Austin, and researchers measured the pollutants in the runoff. Dr. Malina and his research group created a computer model that can predict amounts and types of pollutants in highway runoff based on the number of cars and amount of rainfall. The research has created international standards for designing highway runoff control devices.
