Dr. Lance Manuel earned his Ph.D. in structural engineering from Stanford University in 1993. He joined the College of Engineering in 1999. In support of his research related to the modeling of inflow turbulence and response of electricity-producing wind turbines, Manuel won a National Science Foundation CAREER award.

Manuel and his research team study how randomness in wind flow patterns influences loads on wind turbines. For onshore and offshore sites, he uses computer simulations to learn how coherent spatial structures in turbulence and atmospheric stability affect turbine fatigue and extreme loads. The overall goal of his research is to establish design standards that will allow turbines to efficiently and economically produce electricity over their planned service lives. Manuel is also engaged in studies related to the modeling of forces and motions on deepwater offshore platforms as well as probabilistic analysis of ground motions and structural performance during earthquakes.
