Dr. William O’Brien earned his Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering
from Stanford University in 1998. He joined the faculty of The University of
Texas at Austin in 2004.
Dr. O’Brien researches cost and information modeling of collaborative systems in
the construction industry. Specifically, he is concerned with the implementation
of designs into buildings, supply-chain management and e-commerce. One of
O’Brien’s current projects seeks to model subcontractor costs as an aspect of
supply-chain management. He is also working to determining the value of
collaborative information technology (such as project Web sites) on design and
construction projects. Yet another ongoing project studies the design and
implementation of next generation collaborative systems, such as integrating
heterogeneous information and connecting distributed processes.
Research interests:
- Subcontractor cost and information modeling
- Next-generation collaborative systems
- Supply chain management and lean construction
- Adoption and implementation of new systems
