Dr. Gary A. Pope earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Rice University in 1971. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 1977, and now directs the Center for Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering. Dr. Pope is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the nation’s highest honor for engineering professionals.
Pope researches new and better ways to increase oil and gas production and remove organic contaminants from ground water. He develops and applies models to better understand and design subsurface processes. One well-known model he developed, called UTCHEM, simulates subsurface processes and is widely used. Pope is also well known for his research on surfactants and polymers that enhance oil recovery, and for a groundwater remediation method that uses a detergent solution to flush harmful chemicals out of the ground. He also researches the geological sequestration of carbon dioxide and other greenhouses gases, and a soil heating method to remove mercury from contaminated soils.
Research Interests:
- Enhanced oil and natural gas recovery
- Reservoir engineering and simulation
- Characterization of reservoirs and aquifers with tracers
- Groundwater modeling and remediation
- Geological sequestration of carbon dioxide
