Dr. Carlos Torres-Verdín earned his Ph.D. in engineering geoscience from the University of California at Berkeley in 1991. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 1999. Dr. Torres-Verdín directs the Formation Evaluation Joint Industry Research Consortium of the Center for Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering.
Torres-Verdín researches petrophysical interpretations of measurements acquired in drilled holes. His work on formation evaluation technologies helps petroleum exploration companies determine whether a new field contains enough oil or gas for commercial production. Torres-Verdín uses techniques such as numerical simulation, signal processing, optimization, integrated reservoir characterization and three-dimensional reflection seismology. He interprets electromagnetic and sonic measurements of boreholes to estimate the porosity and hydrocarbon saturation of rock formations. In another project, Torres-Verdín conducts numerical simulations of magnetic resonance and dielectric measurements in hydrocarbon-saturated rocks. He is also estimating the petrophysical properties of rock formations based on seismic amplitude data and well logs.
Research interests:
- Formation evaluation, petrophysics and borehole geophysics
- Numerical simulation and nonlinear inversion
- Integrated reservoir characterization
- Three-dimensional reflection seismology
