Dr. Jorge G. Zornberg earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He worked in geotechnical engineering practice and as faculty at the University of Colorado before joining the University of Texas at Austin in 2003. He received the 2001 CAREER Award from NSF, which was subsequently selected as a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from the Executive Office of the President of the United States.

Dr. Zornberg researches soil reinforcement and environmental geotechnics. His soil reinforcement research includes the evaluation of strain distribution within reinforced soil structures, fiber reinforced soil, reinforced soil structures for bridge abutments, creep in geosynthetic reinforcements, the use of geosynthetics to reinforce poorly draining fills, and the reinforcement of pavement systems. His research in environmental geotechnics includes the safe reuse of recycled tires, design of liquid collection layers, shear strength of geosynthetic clay liners, exposed geomembrane covers subject to wind uplift, and alternative cover systems (evapotranspirative covers) for waste containment.
