Use It or Lose It

Michelle Achacoso, Ph.D

Coordinator of Research and Program Evaluation for the University of Texas Learning Center (UTLC)

DATE & TIME: Tuesday, December 7th from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. The seminar will be presented in the Large Conference Room located on the 10th floor in the ECJ building.

OVERVIEW: While today's cognitive scientist have added to current thinking on how people learn and forget there are some basics that are holding true. Classic studies on memory indicate that students can forget on average 50% of what they learned one day after a lecture if they do nothing else with the information. Conversely, students can remember 75% of the information in a lecture in the next sixty days if they recall the information within 24 hours (Robinson, 1962). More current research has found that if you want students to pay attention and learn, you need to give them deliberately placed breaks (Burns & Anderson, 1993). So how can this knowledge of memory and its limitations make a difference in your classrooms? Please join us for a discussion that will focus on how to help your students become more productive learners by focusing on how memory works and the differences between expert and novice learners.
