OVERVIEW: If you look at the list below of
generational traits, can you identify when this group was born?
* Sheltered
* Enjoy a strong connection with their parents
* Grew up on kid safety rules and lockdown of public schools
* Technology and multitasking as a way of life
If you said the millennials, you are right. This generation, born from 1980 to
1997, is recognized as a high-achieving, intelligent, and optimistic group. Yet
we also hear that as students these digital natives tend to be more academically
disengaged than past generations. They want high grades, but often lack
connection with the material and, by some reports, spend less time studying. Are
you finding such generalizations to be true? Join us as we begin this discussion
by watching a recent 60 Minute segment on the millennials in the work force.
From there we’ll look at what research is saying about this generation. We’ll
end up by discussing ways to effectively connect with them in the classroom.
