Third Year Review
PURPOSE
The purpose of the Third Year Reviews to determine the progress Assistant and Associate Professors are making toward promotion; and to provide early feedback from the Budget Council about that progress with suggestions for change, if any are needed.
STRATEGY
The following steps are to be followed to implement each third year review:
- As an Assistant or Associate Professor nears the third year in rank, the departmental chair will form a subcommittee of the Budget Council to review the faculty member’s teaching, research, and service. This review is to be an abbreviated version of the full review that takes place in consideration for promotion. Materials to be considered in this review are: faculty annual reports, in-class peer reviews of teaching, statements from the faculty being reviewed, statements from the candidate’s mentors, a current résumé, and other materials as the subcommittee deems appropriate.
- The chair of that subcommittee writes a brief (2-3 page maximum) report which is given to the departmental chair and is made available to the Budget Council and the person being reviewed. The committee also makes an oral presentation to the Budget Council.
- The departmental chair is to then meet with the person being reviewed to
go over the report, the purpose being to give that person a concrete statement
on whether or not they are, in the eyes of the Budget Council, on track for
tenure or promotion.
