Abstract
The presentation will provide information about patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets with real life examples of how each type of IP can and is being used. In the discussion both the good and the bad of each type of IP will be discussed. Trademark uses and types will also be discussed, along with a discussion of trademarks becoming generic and how to enforce a trademark. Finally a discussion of trade secrets points out how they are used today and what they can be used for.
Bio
John J. Calvert serves as Administrator for the Inventor Assistance Program at the US Patent and Trademark Office. His responsibilities include oversight for individual inventor programs, establishment of programs with inventor organizations, small business, other federal agencies and educational outreach to all levels of schools from elementary through post graduate. He also served as Acting Director of the Office of Independent Inventor Programs for the Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and the Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Calvert has received numerous achievement awards, including the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal for superior Federal service and the United States Patent and Trademark Office Exceptional Career Award. He has also received numerous Certificate of Achievement and Certificate of Recognition awards. Mr. Calvert completed studies in the Syracuse University, Maxwell School certificates program of Advanced Public Management and completed the Executive Development Seminar sponsored by the Office of Personnel Management..
