The New Realities for Higher Education: Distance Learning in the College of Engineering

Carolyn Stark received her B.S. from Indiana's University's School of Business and a Master's degree from the University of San Francisco and is the Director of the Center for Lifelong Engineering Education (CLEE) in the College of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. CLEE inspires engineering and technology professionals to pursue lifelong education by providing a variety of format and delivery options to access the intellectual capital of the College of Engineering. She works closely with high technology industry in the design and delivery of ongoing education and training programs.
In addition to the traditional classroom setting, CLEE is capable of online course delivery that provides multimedia rich environments that promote student and teacher interactions and student-centered learning. With online course delivery, students have the ease to progress from deciding to take an online course to viewing access – all at their convenience.
Prior to coming to Texas in January, 1999, Ms. Stark was at Stanford University for ten years as Director of Business Development and Marketing for the Stanford Center for Professional Development. Stanford is a leader in the use of distance learning and offers more than 250 Stanford graduate engineering courses and seven engineering master's programs each year through distance learning. In 1995, Ms. Stark lead the effort to develop "Stanford Online" which utilizes streaming media technologies for the delivery of graduate engineering and computer science courses over the internet.
