Ethics as Design:  Using Problems and Cases in Teaching Engineering Ethics

Massachusetts Institute of Technology Caroline Whitbeck, Senior Lecturer at MIT in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is a philosopher of science, technology, and medicine.  She holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Wellesley College, a master's degree from Boston University and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Dr. Whitbeck Combines research interest in the philosophy of science, practical ethics and feminist philosophy with interst in education of a diverse student body for careers in engineering and the science-based professions.    

These objectives have been developed over a period of 150 years in an attempt to comply with the educational mission of MIT as an institution. That mission, simply stated in the current edition of the MIT Bulletin is:

"[The educational] mission [of MIT] is to contribute to society through excellence in education, research, and public service, drawing on core strengths in science, engineering, architecture, humanities and social sciences, and management. This mission is accomplished by an educational program combining rigorous academic study and the excitement of research with the support and intellectual stimulation of a diverse campus community."
