Alec Building Contest

Every year, student organizations compete in the Alec Building Contest. Students, faculty, staff and alumni vote online for their favorite Alec statue of the year. Statues are displayed in ETC before and during Alec's birthday party, where the winning statue is announced. The winning student group receives $500.


  • Online registration is due by March 7, 2017. 
  • Only registered engineering student organizations and FIGs may participate.
  • Alec statue must be between 2 - 4 feet tall, less than 2 feet wide and weigh less than 30 lbs.
  • Alec statue MUST be sturdy and mobile enough to be moved between buildings in windy conditions.
  • Organizations or FIGs are responsible for repairing any statue that breaks during the course of the competition. Failure to make repairs will result in removal.
  • Friends of Alec will provide $20 to each organization for materials. Any unused portion of this stipend must be returned to Friends of Alec, and all purchased items must be accounted for with itemized receipts. Tax-deductible forms will be made available at the Friends of Alec office.
  • Friends of Alec will either provide $20 cash to your organization, or will reimburse up to $20 (without tax) for purchases made for the contest.
  • NOTE: If you would prefer to obtain the $20 cash, the sooner you register online, the sooner your $20 stipend will be available to you. Once a registration is received, Friends of Alec will contact your organization's representative by email to let you know when you may pick up your stipend in ECJ 1.205.
  • Alec statue may be made of any materials except for materials that will easily decompose (certain foods, etc.) or inappropriate items (e.g., beer cans). You are welcome to use any materials you have, find, or purchase yourselves in addition or instead of the items you purchase with the $20 we provide.
  • Alec statue MUST represent the values and traditions of the original Alec. (It should be thought appropriate for the school by anyone who sees it, whether they are familiar with Alec’s history or not.)
  • The Dean or her designated representative will approve all entries.
  • You may NOT enter the same statue your organization entered in a previous year.

Statue Submission

  • Your Alec statue, artist statement, receipts and any remaining money are due to the Friends of Alec office, ECJ 1.205, by noon on Friday, March 10, 2017.  (You may turn them in earlier if you wish.)
  • A blast email with a link to vote online for the best and most creative Alec statue will go out to engineering students, faculty, and staff the week of March 27, 2017.
  • Voting will take place on Facebook. The statue with the most "likes" by 9 AM on March 31 will be declared the winner. 
  • Votes will only be allowed by Alec's Facebook friends. Anyone may request to be Alec's friend.
  • All Alec statue entries will be displayed prior to and during Alec's Birthday Party on March 31, 2017.
  • Organizations and FIGs may campaign for their statue.


  • The winners will be chosen by popular vote and announced at 11:50 AM at Alec’s Birthday Party on Friday, March 31, 2017 in the ETC Lobby.
  • First place wins $500, second gets $250, and third receives $100.
  • A representative from the student organization MUST be present at the time when winners are announced in order to receive a prize. If a representative is not present, the student organization thereby forfeits their prize and the runner-up will receive the prize.
  • Winning funds will be directly deposited into each organization’s or FIG’s account.
  • The first place statue will be displayed in the engineering library (when it relocates to the EERC in the Fall).
