What role will UT play in Energy Research, Policy, and Education

Dr. Charles Groat

Director

Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy

The University of Texas at Austin has a deep talent pool in energy research, which makes it a leading energy-research institution. Although scientific talent puts UT at the forefront of energy research, tackling the major energy issues facing Texas, the U.S., and the world requires coordinated multi-disciplinary approaches; to facilitate this coordination three UT professors have collaborated to begin forming the UT Institute for Energy Studies (IES).

Dr. Charles Groat, director of UT's Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy (CIEEP), is a founding member of the IES along with Dr. David Allen from the Chemical Engineering department and Dr. Makul Sharma from the Petroleum Engineering department; prior to joining UT in 2005, Dr. Groat was the director of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Dr. Groat will discuss the current state of energy and energy-policy research at UT, the need for the IES, and the IES's plans to achieve their primary objectives:

  • Bring together diverse expertise to research energy problems with multi-dimensional challenges
  • Translate the best research and analysis of the major energy challenges, formulate policy options, and bring those options to the attention of government, industry, academia, and the general public
  • Enhance the education of young professionals interested in energy related-careers.
