The typical master's program requires 24 semester hours of course work and a thesis. Some programs allow two additional options: 30 semester hours of course work and a three hour project report or 36 hours of course work. Dual programs have additional requirements.

No specific course requirements exist for the Ph.D. program, but typically 45 to 65 hours of graduate course work are taken beyond the B.S. degree. The student must pass a qualifying examination, complete a dissertation, and do an oral defense of the work. Qualified B.S. degreed students can apply directly to the Ph.D. program. Only the Chemical Engineering Department requires a foreign language requirement.

Masters' and Ph.D candidates (May or December) are invited to attend the Cockrell School of Engineering graduation ceremony or the graduate school ceremony. Dissertation and thesis must be completed before the graduate school ceremony. Get more information on the Graduate School ceremony.

All potential graduates (BS/MS/MA/PHD) will receive a mailing from the Dean's office about 6 weeks before the ceremony. You must return your reading card to ensure you have a seat at graduation. Regalia may be ordered from The University Co-op. Check their Web site for ordering deadlines. The Co-Op phone number is 476-7211, ext. 8210, or call toll-free at 1-800-255-1896, ext. 8210.

Please contact Kelly Collier in the Engineering Dean’s Office at 471-1166 for further information.
