When you come to the United States, (specifically Austin, Texas) you might want to try the following:
Filip’s Recommendations:
Food:
Chicken Fried Steak
A boneless chicken fillet is dipped in a thick batter (a milk and egg mixture) and deep-fried. It is a popular southern dish, usually served with creamy white gravy and mashed potatoes. Everything is big in Texas, so expect the portions of this dish to be quite large as well.
Barbeque (BBQ)
This is usually beef (but it can be chicken and sausage as well) that is marinated and grilled or smoked with a spicy tomato sauce.
Activities
Canoeing or Kayaking
You can rent a canoe for about $8-10 per hour and paddle around Barton Springs with some friends.
Museums
There are several museums close to campus, including the Texas History Museum, as well as the University's art shows.
Michael’s List of Things to Do in Austin:
Capitol
Austin is the capitol of Texas and a tour of the capitol is a MUST for any visitor. The building itself is very reminiscent of the United States Capitol building and if you are lucky you can sit in on a session of the Texas Congress.
6th Street
The “strip” is the home of numerous clubs, bars, and venues of live music. You can find these clubs on 6th itself or directly off it. My recommendations for clubs are Spiros and Paradox. Emos, Antones, Stubbs, and several other locales provide live music to fit any flavor. To get to 6th street on a weekend it is advisable to take the E-bus if you are living near campus.
Congress Ave Bridge
For those not scared of bats, the Congress Avenue Bridge houses 1.5 million bats who leave every night to feed on insects. This is a rare and most unusual sight.
Barton Spring’s pool
Located in Zilker park, this beautiful outdoor pool (the 4th largest spring in Texas) is fed by an underground aquifer which keeps the temperature of the pool at a constant 68 degrees.
