Howell Elected Russian Academician

     UT Engineering professor Jack Howell, Associate Dean for Research, was elected as the foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) on June 2, 1999. The RAS President, Academician Yu. S. Osipov, wrote that he has confidence the election of Dr. Howell as a " foreign member of RAS will contribute to further strengthening the ties between scientists of our two countries."

     Dr. Ben G. Streetman, dean of the College of Engineering, stated: "This is a very high honor for Jack, the Russians take election to the Academy of Sciences very seriously, and Academicians play a key role in Russian society."

     Howell researches controlling temperature and energy. Much of his present work consists of developing fast and accurate computer models of energy devices such as industrial furnaces and semiconductor manufacturing processes. In particular, he is developing computer tools to aid designers of these processes.

     Howell has been a part of the mechanical engineering faculty for twenty-one years and is the Baker Hughes Incorporated Centennial Professor.
