Cockrell School of Engineering professor David Maidment, a water resources expert in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, delivered a briefing presentation to the White House on Oct. 3 on the National Flood Interoperability Experiment (NFIE).

NFIE is a collaborative effort between the academic and federal communities — including the National Weather Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, American Council on Education and the Federal Emergency Management Agency — to connect national flood forecasting data, tools and modeling with local flood emergency response in order to improve flood forecasting, emergency response and community resilience. The NFIE is closely related to ongoing efforts in Earth observations, open data, disaster management and climate resilience, among other topics.

The briefing was convened by the Office of Science and Technology Policy.
