The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) has chosen Mia K. Markey to receive the 2015 ASEE Sharon Keillor Award for Women in Engineering, which recognizes and honors outstanding women engineering educators.

Markey, a professor of biomedical engineering, is recognized for her dedication to teaching and innovative research in the area of cost-effective, computational medical decision aids to help physicians better diagnose, treat, and manage cancer.

Markey's research focus is on improving women's health. She and her Biomedical Informatics Lab concentrate on computer-aided diagnosis of breast cancer from medical imaging exams, computational aids for decision making about breast cancer treatment that include quantitative measures of expected change to a survivor's appearance, and computational methods for identifying biomarkers from genomic and proteomic analyses. Her work has benefitted from close collaboration with colleagues at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center for the development of clinically relevant decision support systems.

"She has approached the field of computer-based clinical decision-making and support from an engineering perspective," said Biomedical Engineering Department Chair Nicholas Peppas. "Mia Markey is already recognized as one of the world's leaders of the young generation of biomedical computing."

In addition to her research, Markey has been recognized for her contributions to teaching, as a recipient of undergraduate and graduate faculty appreciation awards from students at The University of Texas at Austin.

An American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow, Markey has been recognized with the Society for Women's Health Research Medtronic Prize, a Coulter Foundation Award for Early Career Achievements in Translational Research, as well as major research awards from the National Institutes of Health. She is also a senior member of IEEE and SPIE.

She will be honored with the recognition at an awards ceremony on June 15, 2015, in Seattle, Washington.
