Dr. Chandra Bhat, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, has performed a comprehensive survey of family characteristics and other factors affecting how children spend weekend free time. The children between 5 and 15 years of age were part of families who responded to a 2002 survey on child development that was part of the U.S. Panel Study Income Dynamics.

Among other findings, the study encompassing 1,574 children done by Bhat and graduate research assistant Ipek Sener revealed that fathers spent progressively more time with their children in out-of-home activities as the fathers' ages increased into the 60s. The study results are being presented at the national meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington, D.C.
