Babuska's Birth Hailed as Major Event

     Dr. Ivo Babuska, professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics, has received a most unusual honor. The birth of the Prague native was recently mentioned in a list of Prague’s “top 11 historical events” between 1197 and 1966 a.d. compiled by Mlada Fronta Dnes, the Czech Republic’s largest newspaper.

     Dr. Babuska’s research specialty is applied and computational mathematics, particularly the numerical solution of partial differential equations. His major field of application is continuum mechanics. He is the recipient of many honors and awards including the Humbolt Award of the Federal Republic of Germany, Honorary Foreign Member of the Czech Learned Society, and honorary doctorates from universities in the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic and Finland. He has published over 300 scientific papers as well as several books, and is a member of more than 15 international journals.

     Dr. Babuska, who joined the UT engineering and mathematics faculties in 1995 following his retirement from the University of Maryland, holds the Robert B. Trull Chair in Engineering. He was born in 1926.
