Ravi-Chandar Elected Honorary Fellow of International Organization
February 12, 2002

Dr. K. Ravi-Chandar, professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics, has been elected honorary fellow of the International Congress on Fracture, which is a member organization of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. Members are elected “in recognition of work to foster research in the mechanics and phenomena of fracture”. He was also elected their vice president for the 2002-2006 term.

Dr. Ravi-Chandar researches the mechanical behavior of solids and deals with the characterization of the strength of materials and structures in a range of applications. His laboratory places particular emphasis on high strain rate fracture behavior dealing with issues of how and why things break quickly, such as in crashes or similar situations, where material/structure failure typically occurs in tens of a millionth of a second.
