Dr. Thomas J.R. Hughes, professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics at The University of Texas at Austin, has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the Universiteì Catholique de Louvain in Belgium for his “numerous contributions to the field of computational mechanics.”
Dr. Hughes has published over 300 works on computational methods in solid, structural and fluid mechanics and is among the top 15 most highly cited authors in computer science, as well as among the top 100 most highly cited authors in engineering (all fields). He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and is currently the president of the International Association for Computational Mechanics. He is the recipient of many awards for his research, which currently involves the study and application of Large-Eddy Simulations and the development of cardiovascular surgical planning procedures based on simulations of patient-specific models. His work has had a major impact on the development of software used throughout the world today.
