Ravi-Chandar to give prestigious lecture
February 24, 2003

Dr. K. Ravi-Chandar, professor of aerospace engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, was chosen by the Society for Experimental Mechanics on the basis of his “sustained and distinguished technical contributions to the field of experimental mechanics” to deliver the 2004 William M. Murray Lecture and receive the 2004 Murray Medal. The lecture and formal award ceremony will occur June 9, 2004 at the society’s international congress.

The William M. Murray Lecture was initiated in 1952 as the Society for Experimental Mechanics prestige lecture. It is presented each year as a continuing honor to Dr. William MacGregor Murray, first president and long-time secretary-treasurer, for his many contributions to the society.

Dr. Ravi-Chandar researches the mechanical behavior of solids and the characterization of the strength of materials and structures in a range of applications. His laboratory places particular emphasis on high-strain rate fracture to determine how and why things break quickly in crashes or similar situations, where material/structural failure typically occurs in tens of a millionth of a second.
