UT engineering programs again ranked top ten in country

In the annual rankings of academic quality by U.S. News and World Report, the Engineering graduate program moved up to ninth in the nation among 330 accredited engineering schools, and fifth among the public institutions.     

The magazine examined 185 engineering schools in its April 7 issue, and in the "peer assessment" category, in which deans are asked to rank all schools, UT's College of Engineering was ranked eighth.  UT Austin's individual engineering programs were all ranked in the top ten except for the newly created Biomedical Engineering Department:  Aerospace (8th), Chemical (6th), Civil (3rd), Computer (8th), Electrical/Electronics (9th), Environmental (6th) and Mechanical (10th). Petroleum engineering departments are ranked every two years, and last year's rankings placed UT's Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering first.
    

The rankings are based on entrance exam scores, student acceptance rates, faculty/student ratios, research dollars awarded, reputation among engineers in academia and industry, Ph.D.s produced, and percentage of faculty elected to membership in the National Academy of Engineering.
