Li Shi, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, received a Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research.
Shi will use the $300,000 to research developing efficient nanowire thermoelectric coolers and generators. His new cooling method promises to tremendously advance work toward cleaner, quieter refrigeration and power generation units, as well as work toward improved semiconductors.
The Office of Naval Research awards approximately 25 research grants a year to researchers that received their Ph.D.s within six years. Typically less than 10 percent of submissions are selected for the award.
