Founded in 1852, ASCE is the oldest national engineering society in America, and represents more than 133,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide. ASCE Fellow grade is the second-highest membership grade in the organization, and requires that a candidate have at least 10 years of exceptional responsible charge of engineering experience gain while at member grade in ASCE, be a licensed professional engineer or land surveyor, be nominated by an ASCE organizational entity and have at least three testimonial references (one from an ASCE member, and two from ASCE Fellows).
Dr. Hughes’s research currently focuses on the development of cardiovascular surgical procedures based on simulations of patient-specific models. His work at the Institute for Computational Engineering and Science employs digital computers in simulation technology to utilize patient-specific data in constructing mathematical models of individual patients. This allows medical professionals to implement various medical interventions virtually and make decisions based on predicted outcomes.
Dr. Hughes has served on the College of Engineering faculty since September 2002, and is currently the Computational and Applied Mathematics Chair III. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics, the International Association for Computational Mechanics and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
