Dr. Ivo Babuska has been awarded the highest scientific honor in his home country, the Czech Republic. The award joins an impressive list of honors he has earned.

Babuska will receive the Honorary Medal "De Scientia Et Humanitate Optime Meritis" by the Academy Council of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The award is for outstanding Czech scientists and citizens, as well as foreign scientists who contributed to the development of Czech science and culture.

The Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics professor, who holds the Robert B. Trull Chair in Engineering, earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic in 1951. He also earned a Ph.D. and D.Sc. in mathematics in from the Academy of Sciences. He served as a research fellow and department head at the Mathematical Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences from 1949 to 1968.

Besides now holding the highest honor from the Czech Academy of Sciences, he holds four honorary doctorates and in February 2005 was elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. The researcher now works with The University of Texas at Austin’s Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences.

Babuska specializes in the numerical solutions of partial differential equations, especially the finite element method, and applied mathematics in general. One major field of application is continuum mechanics. Babuska has made significant contributions to the theory and implementation of finite element methods for computer-based engineering analysis and design.
