Professor named chair of international research association

University of Texas at Austin Civil Engineering Professor Chandra Bhat has been named chair of the International Association of Travel Behavior Research.

The organization is an international non-profit professional association of academics and practitioners who are interested in research that advances understanding of the link between individuals’ activities, information exchange and travel behavior.

Association members around the world chose Bhat for the chair position, which will last for two years, in a direct secret ballot election.

Bhat’s uses mathematical modeling to study how people make decisions about their activities and travel choices. His research makes possible evaluations of the effectiveness of traffic alleviation strategies such as telecommuting, work schedule changes and ridesharing.

Bhat holds the Fluor Centennial Teaching Fellowship in Engineering No. 1.  He also serves as associate chair of the university’s Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering. In addition to the Chairmanship of the International Association of Travel Behavior Research, Bhat also holds the Chairmanship of the Transportation Demand Forecasting Committee of the National Transportation Research Board.
