Torres elected to AISD board of trustees

Vincent Torres, associate director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Resources at The University of Texas at Austin, was elected to the Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees on May 13.

He will represent AISD single member district 4, which encompasses northwest Austin. Torres ran unopposed. His four-year term will last through May 2010.

Torres chaired the bond advisory and oversight committees for both the 2002 and 2004 bond elections. He has received awards for his volunteer work in schools and the community from Hill Elementary School, AISD’s Partners in Education and the Texas chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.

Torres has worked as a research development engineer in the fields of fluids, energy and environmental studies for more than 27 years. At the Center for Energy and Environmental Resources, Torres manages and conducts research on outdoor and indoor air quality and the efficient use of heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems to improve air quality in buildings.
 
The Center for Energy and Environmental Resources focuses on efficient and economical use of energy and on ensuring a cleaner environment by developing, in cooperation with industry, processes and technologies that minimize waste and conserve natural resources.

After attending the U.S. Naval Academy, Torres received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering from the university in 1976 and 1979 respectively.
