A team of four petroleum engineering students at The University of Texas at Austin received first place at the 2009 Society for Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Petrobowl competition.
The national Petrobowl was a seven-hour, highly competitive tournament consisting of four rounds of quizzes among 16 collegiate teams. Team members answered questions about economics, history, geography and geopolitics of petroleum.
“The PetrolBowl is a fun annual event where students from different schools engage in friendly competition. But it also has a serious side when the teams demonstrate their mastery of knowledge in the industry for which they are going to work. We are very proud of our team's success," said Dr. Tad Patzek, chairman of the department.
Winning team members were petroleum engineering graduate student Kelli Rankin, and petroleum engineering undergraduates Michael Sykes, Nathan Taylor, and Sanzhar Zharkeshov.
The winning team received $2,500 and a first place trophy.
