Engineering alumna Stephanie Wilson returned to earth July 17

When Mission Specialist Stephanie Wilson made her first trip to space July 4 on the STS-121 crew, she became the eighth UT engineer in space and the second African American woman to achieve that feat. The shuttle returned to earth safely on July 17.

UT System to launch nanoelectronics initiative

The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved funding to help launch a $30 million nanoelectronics initiative. The cornerstone of the initiative will be a nanoelectronics research center at the university. UT System will participate with the state of Texas, Texas Instruments and other industry partners in a proposal to create the Southwest Academy of Nanoelectronics, which Electrical Engineering Professor Sanjay Banerjee will direct. The initiative also calls for recruiting talented nanoelectronics experts to hold research/faculty appointments at three UT institutions.

Engineering Professor Dale Klein sworn in as chairman of U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission

Dr. Dale E. Klein, designated by President Bush as chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, was sworn in Saturday, July 1, in a private ceremony at the NRC headquarters here. Klein is a professor of mechanical engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.
