Mechanical engineer to bicycle across America for organ donation awareness

Last fall, Rick and Denise Neptune rode their tandem bike for 12 hours straight in northern Texas for the fun of it, racking up 238 miles to win their division in the North American Ultra Cycling Championship. Rick Neptune now has a bigger cycling goal as he begins bicycling that many miles a week to train for a June race considered one of the world's most challenging athletic events.

In the 1960s, astronauts provided the world with the first glimpses of Earth from afar. In those same years Aerospace Engineering Professor Byron Tapley nudged NASA to measure Earth's gravity from space. Four decades later Tapley got his wish when NASA and the German Space Agency collaborated on the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), now completing its fifth year of doing far more than measuring the attractive pull of Earth on objects.

The University of Texas at Austin first siren system test set for March 7

The University of Texas at Austin will conduct the first test of a new outdoor siren warning system at 11:50 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7. The system test lasts one minute, and no action is necessary during the test. Monthly tests will begin with the announcement, "This is a test." If sirens are activated, and do not announce, "This is a test," it means there is an emergency and those outside should seek shelter immediately. If a severe weather warning is issued for the area on a scheduled test day, the test will be cancelled for that month.
