Oilfield offers open classroom for top petroleum engineering students

Natural gas drilling sites, oilfield pumping equipment and rugged, remote office locations appended two years of scholarly books and orderly classrooms when 33 petroleum engineering students attended Camp Bevo this month. The University of Texas at Austin Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering began the "intersession" program three years ago as a student retention tool. For many participants it represented their first introduction to an actual oilfield outside of university laboratories.

Charles A. Sorber, a former senior administrator at the University of Texas System, former president of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and former interim president of the University of Texas at Arlington, has agreed to come out of retirement and head the Office of Student Financial Services for an interim period, beginning May 29. Sorber, professor emeritus in the College of Engineering, agreed to step in as Lawrence W. Burt, associate vice president and director of student financial services at The University of Texas at Austin, was dismissed today following an investigation into allegations of impropriety in his office.
