Lighter power sources for communication devices expected from $5.8 million grant to engineers, chemists

A technology to produce fuel cells that serve as easily replaced, lightweight power sources for cell phones, laptops, MP3 players and other devices is being developed by a team led by a mechanical engineer at The University of Texas at Austin.

Prof. Ted Rappaport, professor of electrical engineering, has been asked by Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine to serve on the state's "Broadband Roundtable", a project that will have Dr. Rappaport working with former Virginia Governor Mark Warner and Virginia’s Secretary of Technology Aneesh Chopra to develop strategies to accelerate broadband connectivity to rural homes and businesses in Virginia.

SSPEED is state's first hub for storm prediction, evacuation, disaster research Texas Gov. Rick Perry has signed legislation creating Texas' first research center to focus exclusively on predicting and planning for disasters caused by hurricanes and tropical storms. Legislation creating the new center -- the Severe Storm Prediction, Education and Evacuation from Disaster Center, or SSPEED -- was sponsored by Rep. Dennis Bonnen and Sen. Kyle Janek and unanimously passed both houses of the Texas Legislature this spring.

AMD pledges $1 million to computer engineering at The University of Texas at Austin

The University of Texas at Austin College of Engineering has received a $1 million endowment pledge from AMD. This unique endowment, the first of its kind at the university, will be used for course redesign, student and faculty support and laboratory improvement, and will be administered by the chairman of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department. The funds will be given over a four-year period.
