Please click on the person's name to visit their bio page. InternationalDr. Jacob Abraham, professor of electrical and computer engineering, along with recent Ph.D. graduate Vivekananda M. Vedula and Motorola’s Jayanta Bhadra, won the Best Paper Award at the 21st Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Very Large Scale Integration Test Symposium. Dr. Hillary Hart, senior lecturer of civil engineering, was named an associate fellow of the Society for Technical Communication. David Maidment, director of the Center for Research in Water Resources, was presented with the lifetime achievement award from the Environmental Systems Research Institute. Dr. Nicholas Peppas, professor of biomedical engineering and chemical engineering, was elected president of the Society for Biomaterials. Dr. Grant Willson, professor of chemical engineering, was awarded the Photopolymer Science and Technology Award from the Conference of Photopolymer Science and Technology.

NationalProfessors and students developing curriculum for the new biomedical engineering department won the Best Paper Award at the American Society for Engineering Education Gulf-Southwest Section Conference in March 2003. Collaborators include Dr. Ronald Barr, mechanical engineering professor, Dr. Marcus Pandy, biomedical engineering professor, Tejas Karande, biomedical engineering graduate student, Dr. Anthony Petrosino, professor of curriculum and instruction, Larry Abraham, professor of kinesiology and Bijal Patel, kinesiology graduate student. Dr. Joe C. Campbell, professor of electrical and computer engineering, was awarded the 2003 Nick Holonyak, Jr. Award from the Optical Society of America. Dr. George Georgiou, professor of chemical and biomedical engineering, was awarded the 2003 Professional Progress Award for Outstanding Progress in Chemical Engineering by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Dr. Earnest F. Gloyna, professor emeritus of civil engineering, was chosen as one of five recipients of the Outstanding Projects and Leaders Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Dr. Mario Gonzalez, professor of computer engineering, was named a fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education. Dr. Tess Moon, associate professor of mechanical engineering, received the 2003 National Society of Professional Engineers’ Engineering Education Excellence Award. Dr. Richard Tucker, civil engineering professor, Dr. John Borcherding, civil engineering adjunct professor and civil engineering doctoral candidate Mike Pappas were given the outstanding paper award at the 2003 Construction Research Congress meeting. Dr. Gary C. Vliet, professor of mechanical engineering, was named a fellow and received the 2003 recipient of the Hoyt Clarke Hottel Award from the American Solar Energy Society. Dr. Mary Wheeler, professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics, and petroleum and geosystems engineering, was awarded the Computational Fluid Mechanics Award by the United States Association for Computational Mechanics. |

StateDr. Michael Engelhardt, professor of civil engineering, and Dr. Gustavo de Veciana, professor of electrical and computer engineering were two of four University of Texas at Austin faculty members named recipients of the El Paso Corporate Foundation Faculty Achievement Award. University, CollegeDr. John E. Breen, civil engineering professor, was chosen by the Graduate Engineering Council to receive their Faculty Appreciation Award for 2002-2003. Dr. Kenneth R. Diller, professor of biomedical engineering, is the 2003 recipient of the Joe J. King Professional Engineering Achievement Award. Dr. Mike Engelhardt, professor of civil engineering, was selected as The University’s 2003-2004 William David Blunk Memorial Professor. Dr. John B. Goodenough, professor of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, is the 2003 recipient of the Billy and Claude R. Hocott Distinguished Centennial Engineering Research Award. The Texas Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (TICAM) Visiting Faculty Fellowship Program, made possible by an endowment donated by a private foundation, has been renamed the J. Tinsley Oden Faculty Fellowship Research Fund in honor of the aerospace engineering professor who has managed it since its inception. Dr. Kristin Wood, professor of mechanical engineering, was elected to the university’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers along with six other UT Austin faculty members. Ben Streetman, dean of the College of Engineering and professor of electrical engineering, received this year’s Robert Murff Excellence Award from The University of Texas at Austin.
StaffSix engineering staff members were selected as the College of Engineering’s 2003 Staff Excellence Award recipients. The award is given to honor “selected non-teaching personnel who have contributed significantly to the effectiveness of the teaching, advising, counseling and research efforts of the College.” Winners include Blake Stasney of the Ferguson Structural Engineering Lab, Ann Armstrong of biomedical engineering, Pat Bozeman of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, (formerly the Texas Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics), Bob Gloyd of the Information Technology Group, Michael Krause of the Nuclear Engineering Teaching Lab and Don Sorrell of petroleum and geosystems engineering These represent awards received by college faculty and staff since June 2003.
