Welcome to the Cockrell School of Engineering!

This is an exciting time for students preparing for careers in engineering and you'll encounter the best engineering faculty and students in the world here at the Cockrell School.  This is acknowledged through various facts and figures, including studies by U.S News and World Report, which ranks the Cockrell School of Engineering in the top ten nationally among more than 300 engineering schools.

Engineers create and design technology for society. Our daily lives depend on the engineer's products: cell phones, laptop computers, cars, fuels, buildings, bridges, medical devices, aircraft, and more. Our goal at the Cockrell School is to provide the highest quality education in the fundamentals of engineering and just as importantly, the vital skills necessary to lead these advancements.

Our world-renowned faculty have been carefully selected for their knowledge, experience and diversity. With the fourth highest membership in the National Academy of Engineering, the nation’s highest honor for engineers, our faculty provide the best minds available among seasoned engineering professionals. The junior members of the faculty have earned more than 80 National Science Foundation awards for their professional potential. We are also proud of the diversity of the faculty--the Cockrell School ranks eighth nationally among engineering schools for the number of Hispanic faculty.

The engineering student body are also carefully selected from a highly talented pool of diverse applicants.  The majority of freshmen are from the top 10 percent of their graduating class and 10 percent were valedictorians or salutatorians.  The graduate program reports an average 3.6 GPA for new entrants.  Students gain valuable perspectives from diverse peers as illustrated by UT Austin ranking fourth nationally in producing undergraduate engineering degrees for historically underrepresented groups.

Beyond our Web site, we offer informational sessions for prospective students during campus visits, and our Engineering Student Affairs Office can provide additional information at (512) 471-4321.
