Bureau of Engineering Research
The Bureau of Engineering Research, under which the Office of the Associate Dean for Research falls, serves as the administrative structure for research in the Cockrell School of Engineering. It was established in 1910 as an engineering testing laboratory and now plays a key role in the Cockrell School's efforts to build and maintain a premier engineering research program, as engineering research is a vital component of the national reputation of the Cockrell School. UT Cockrell School of Engineering has steadily risen among the ranks of the country's top engineering schools.
The Bureau assists researchers who are working independently as well as those working in conjunction with one of the research centers, many of which are located on the Pickle Research Campus. With nearly 300 professional faculty and research staff in the Cockrell School of Engineering and 6,000 students in 14 graduate programs and 8 undergraduate programs, there is a wide variety of exciting and challenging projects and programs in medical and bioengineering, energy and environmental resources, geotechnical engineering, space research, manufacturing, microelectronics research, offshore technology, petroleum & geosystems engineering, research in water resources, telecommunications, transportation research, materials, electronics, controls, and aeromechanics.
The Bureau works to expand collaboration and interdisciplinary research, improve facilities, recruit researchers, manage resources and increase funding. To give you a general idea of just how big engineering research is here at UT, during our last fiscal year, research expenditures exceeded $111 million dollars, with approximately 55% from federal sources, 22% from private/industrial sources, and 23% from state/local and other sources. The basic mission of our office is to improve the research environment in the College which compliments academic instruction and also responds to the needs of our society.
The Bureau of Engineering Research is in charge of initiating and coordinating reviews for our research centers, promoting research interactions with industry, coordinating requests for large scale renovations throughout the Cockrell School of Engineering, notifying chairs of certain research funding opportunities, and sponsoring various workshops as needed.
