1. The Cockrell School of Engineering will provide a one time scholarship to use while conducting an approved undergraduate research or global education (study abroad) experience through The University of Texas at Austin.
2. Students choosing to use the scholarship to help fund a study abroad term work through the Global Engineering Education area in the Engineering Student Affairs Office (ECJ 2.200) to facilitate their study abroad.
-
Before leaving, students complete the Engineering Scholarship Program’s online Study Abroad Form, which requires a short essay.
-
Once the student completes the form and registers for study abroad through UT, the Engineering Scholarship Program will release the study abroad scholarship on the 12th class day during the study abroad semester.
3. Students choosing to use the scholarship to help fund a research term will identify a research position at UT Austin and secure approval from a supervising engineering faculty member. The Engineering Scholarship Program can not facilitate placement of scholars in research positions. However, several resources exist to help students identify areas of research and faculty members’ research topics.
- Prior to the research term, the student will complete a form notifying the Engineering Scholarship Program of their selected research topic, which includes the supervising faculty member’s signature.
- The student registers for a technical elective class in their major for credit, usually referred to as a Research Topic or Special Project class.
- After completing the research form and registering for the research class, the student receives the research scholarship funds.
- Once a student completes a research term, the student provides the Engineering Scholarship Program with a copy of the research summary presented to the supervising faculty member, or a short summary essay.
4. To access this funding, scholarship recipients must be in good academic standing with the Engineering Scholarship Program regarding their multi-year scholarship. Should the School discontinue a student’s multi-year scholarship award due to a student switching to a non-engineering major, failing to meet GPA requirements or any other circumstances, the research/study abroad scholarship opportunity would be canceled also.
5. The cost associated with a study abroad experience may exceed the $2,500 scholarship. Students should expect to fund any additional financial obligations associated with studying abroad. Students may qualify for, but are not guaranteed, additional financial support for study abroad from other sources. The UT Center for Global Education Opportunities serves as a resource to assist students in locating and applying for additional scholarships supporting study abroad.
6. Students can participate in both an undergraduate research experience and a study abroad experience. However this funding is intended to support only one of these activities. This one time scholarship can not be used for any other purpose.
7. If a student chooses not to participate in an undergraduate research or study abroad experience, then the student forfeits the research/study abroad scholarship. The student’s multi-year scholarship award will not be affected, as long as the student continues to meet the necessary requirements.
8. The research/study abroad scholarship can begin as early as a the student’s second year at UT Austin. However, the School recommends students wait until they have been admitted to major sequence to participate in research or study abroad programs. The research or study abroad term must be completed the semester before a student fulfills the requirements for their undergraduate engineering degree at UT Austin.
9. Only one semester of research or study abroad is required for eligibility. Students can conduct a research or study abroad term during the fall, spring or summer. Students participating in a faculty directed programs such as Maymester or International Engineering Programs also qualify.
