Rivals Week 2008

Rivals Week is an annual week of competitions between Cockrell School of Engineering and McCombs School of Business students, hosted by the Student Engineering Council in conjunction with the Undergraduate Business Council. Check out current scores, calendar, and event information below.

Event Information

  • Sunday, March 30 (5-7pm): Bowling @ Texas Union Underground
  • Event: Six lanes of bowling, half engineering and half business teams, first-come, first-served for play. Standard bowling rules should be followed for every game played. We're giving out our shirts here, and we should have pizza. Only people with shirts can bowl and get pizza.

    Scoring: 50 points per team added to college score for participation, top ten individual scores added to appropriate college scores.

    Results: There were 26 business and 35 engineering scores reported, giving business 217 points and engineering 292 points for participation. In addition, the top ten bowling scores were added to the players' schools, as shown in the list below.

  • Monday, March 31 (7:30-9:30 pm): Dodgeball @ Anna Hiss Gym (AHG 133)
  • Event: NADA-approved dodgeball using two halves of a basketball court. Players will divide into college teams of 6-10 students. Last team with a member standing wins!

    Scoring: 100 points per college with a victorious round.

    Results: There were 9 rounds played. Engineers won 4 rounds and business students won 5 rounds, giving each team 400 and 500 points, respectively.

  • Tuesday, April 1 (5:30-7:30 pm): Build-n-Sell @ ECJ 10th Floor Suite
  • Event: Teams have 20 minutes to develop a contraption using given materials to address the prompt's problem (to be given at the competition) and then 5 minutes to sell it to a panel of judges and peers.

    Scoring: 100 points per every 5 participants for participation; top three teams get 200, 150, and 100 point bonus added to their college's score.

    Results: We had 9 presentations made by 13 business students and 11 engineering students, giving the McCombs School of Business 260 points for participation and the Cockrell School of Engineering 220 points for participation. The top three teams were:

    1. UF^2 = C, business - 200 points added to business total
    2. A-Team, business - 150 points added to business total
    3. The Green Machine, engineering - 100 points added to engineering total
  • Wednesday, April 2 (9pm): Capture the Flag @ Capitol Hill South Mall
  • Event: Engineering team and business team play Capture the Flag on the south grounds of the state capitol. ARRIVE (in the blue circled region of the map) ON TIME! The game WILL start at 9:15pm and we need to go through safety and rules at 9pm SHARP!

    Scoring: 300 points per successful flag "capture".

    Results: Five rounds were played; business students won the first four, giving them 1200 points, and the fifth skirmish was declared a draw.

  • Thursday, April 3 (6:30-8:30 pm): Jeopardy and Awards Ceremony @ GSB 2.126
  • Event: Quiz bowl-like competition (four rounds: toss-ups, bonuses, 60-second round, and "stump the experts") between engineering and business teams and FREE Italian dinner catered by Fazoli's.

    Scoring: up to 1000 points possible from questions with various point values.

    Results: Engineers triumphed with 690 points, beating out the business students' 460.
