Short-term programs are designed specifically for engineering students to further their education abroad, including several programs offering immersion opportunities in industry or research.

Maymesters

4 weeks. Courses are attached to spring semester registration but start late May and end late June. Maymesters are led by UT Austin faculty. Average group size is 15 to 35 students. Programs/Courses  By Major chart.

Application

Applications open in September. Deadlines to apply:

  • Maymesters: November 1
  • Summer Programs: December 1

To begin your application:

  1. Self-authorize access to the application. Enter the year abroad (2016), semester and application type (Maymester or Summer Program) and the application code.
  2. Start the application on MySAO.

Application Information

Be prepared to:

  • Pay the non-refundable $75 application fee on What I Owe
  • Enter the program code
  • Sign the financial responsibility statement
  • Sign the responsibilities of participation and code of conduct
  • Submit two short essays
  • Have a UT faculty member submit an online reference questionnaire
  • UT disciplinary check (automatically submitted, no action required)

Program Choices

The application asks for first and second choice programs. The second choice listed does not affect first choice acceptance decisions. If you do not have a second choice program, enter the first choice again.

Registration

Maymesters

  • Courses are UT spring courses
  • Students register during spring registration: October/November access period or January add/drop
  • Program application and course registration are two separate processes.
  • Students can register without having yet been accepted

Timeline

Oct. 30 - Nov. 10: Spring Registration

  • Register for your first choice Maymester course(s) and if applicable, International Learning Seminar. See links below for further instructions.
  • For undergraduate students, the Maymester course(s) does not affect the max hours registration limit
    • Report any issues to program coordinator

November 1: Maymester application deadline

Mid November: Acceptance notifications (by Thanksgiving break)

December 10: Confirmation of participation deadline

Jan. 8 - Jan. 12: Spring registration add/drop

  • Last chance to register for Maymester course(s).
  • Waitlist / Denied students drop course(s).
    • Waitlisted students instructed to re-register if later accepted.

February 4: Waitlist canceled; students move to "denied" status.

February 20: Program fee deadline.

  • Can be deferred to financial aid
  • Last day to withdraw from program without penalty

February 21: Financial responsibility begins.


 Summer Programs

  • Registration, tuition and fees follows the standard UT summer schedule.
  • Reference the program registration instruction sheet from the program coordinator.
    • The PRIS is specific to each program.

January 22: Non-refundable program deposit due

March 1: Financial responsibility begins.

February 4: Summer registration

  • Register for all study abroad courses

May 1: Program fee deadline (may be deferred to financial aid)

May 17:  Summer tuition payment deadline (undergraduates)

  • Pay by 4:59 p.m.
  • Non-payment triggers course drops
  • Financial aid students may defer to financial aid or take out a tuition loan

Funding

Students already receiving Cockrell School and non-UT Austin scholarships may carry over these funds for their semester abroad. Students already on financial aid should be able to apply for additional loans, if necessary, to cover all required expenses for studying abroad including room/board, required transportation, passport/visa and insurance. Students may also apply for additional study abroad scholarships, whether based on merit or need.

Scholarships

  • International Education Fee Scholarship (Spring & Maymester) $1200-1800 scholarships. Award description, eligibility criteria and applications are available on GLOBAL ASSIST. Deadline October 1.
  • International Education Fee Scholarship (Summer) $1200-1800 scholarships. Award description, eligibility criteria and applications are available on GLOBAL ASSISTDeadline February 15.
  • Maymester Scholarship - International Office $2000 scholarships. Award description, eligibility criteria and applications are available on GLOBAL ASSIST. Deadline November 1.
  • 25-Year Anniversary Scholarship (Maymester) $2000 scholarships available for programs in under-represented regions: Africa, Asia (excluding China), Caribbean, Central America and the Middle East. Award description, eligibility criteria and applications are available on GLOBAL ASSIST. Deadline November 1.
  • Summer Faculty-Led Scholarship - International Office $2000 scholarships. Award description, eligibility criteria and applications are available on GLOBAL ASSISTDeadline December 1.
  • Benjamin A. Gilman Awards - For Pell Grant recipients. Scholarships up to $5000. Online application. (Note: Maymesters are considered summer programs by Gilman). Apply at Gilman onlineDeadline March 1.
  • Diversity Abroad. For economically disadvantaged, first generation students, students with disabilities and ethnic and racially diverse students. $500 scholarships. Apply at Diversity Abroad onlineDeadline April 1.
