The University of Texas at Austin

Change of Major/Internal Transfer

Internal transfer describes the process of a currently enrolled undergraduate student at UT Austin moving from one college to another or within the Cockrell School from one major to another.  Students must apply for an internal transfer into Cockrell School majors through an online application.  Admission is competitive and based on space availability.  UT Austin degree holders seeking a second degree in engineering should contact the Student Affairs Office for information on a separate application process.

Application Deadlines

December 1 for admission the following spring semester

May 1 for admission the following summer or fall semester

Applications received by these deadlines will go through a competitive selection process.  You will receive a decision before the next registration period ends.

Essential Requirements

The following requirements must be met by all internal transfer applicants.

  • You have completed a minimum of 24 hours in residence at UT Austin (in a UT Austin classroom).  Credit by exam, UT Correspondence, UT Extension, and transfer hours are not in residence courses and are not included in the 24 hour minimum.
  • You have a minimum 3.0 cumulative in-residence grade point average (GPA).
  • You have a minimum 3.0 in-residence GPA in all required technical courses.  (Required technical courses include the physics, calculus, chemistry, biology, geology and departmental courses required for your proposed major.  The current academic year catalogue is used to calculate required technical GPA.) View Required Technical GPA Worksheet
  • You have completed the equivalent of M 408D or M 408M.
  • You have completed the equivalent of PHY 303K and PHY 103M.

Students who are currently enrolled and will meet the minimum criteria by the end of the application semester listed are eligible to apply.

Admission Decision Criteria

Admission to all majors in the Cockrell School of Engineering is offered on a space-available basis to those students who are best academically qualified. Academic qualification is objective and based on the in-residence cumulative GPA and the in-residence required technical GPA.  For equally qualified applicants, preference will be given to the student who has completed more of the courses required for the requested major.

The Cockrell School does not have a standard GPA requirement for internal transfer admission.  The cumulative and required technical GPAs of admitted students vary by semester and requested major.  You may view the academic qualifications of students admitted in previous semesters below.  Again, these are past GPA cutoffs, not requirements for admission in future semesters.

Advising and Information Sessions

Optional advising will be available for students with additional questions after they have completed the online quiz, which can be found on the application website.  In order to prepare for the quiz, we encourage students to view the online info-session, or attend a live info-session.  You will also be required to print and complete the internal transfer advising worksheet and bring it with you to your appointment.  To make an appointment with an advisor in the Student Affairs Office, drop by ECJ 2.200 or call 512-471-4321.

FAQs

I know I want to be an engineer, but I'm not sure which major I want.  Can I apply to the Cockrell School without choosing, and then declare a major later?
No.  You must apply to a specific major (or two).
Okay, then where can I learn more about engineering majors?
The Cockrell School degree program website is a good place to start.  It describes each of our available majors and provides links to the department webpages and four year degree plans.  You are always welcome to speak with the undergraduate faculty advisors in each department if you would like more specific information about specialties and research.  If, on the other hand, you are looking for a more general overview of the fields, check out our Cockrell School major descriptions and the websites listed above, under Research Majors.
Can I apply for two engineering majors?
Yes.  In fact, we encourage you to do so as long as you are truly interested in both degree plans.  When you apply for internal transfer, you'll be able to select a first-choice major and a second-choice major.  Initially you’ll be considered for admission to your first-choice major. If you aren’t admitted to that major, you’ll be considered for your second-choice major.
I'm already majoring in Economics, but I would like to double major in Chemical Engineering.  Should I use this application?
Yes.  If you are not a Cockrell School student, you may apply to add an engineering major through this internal transfer process.
I am currently a Civil Engineering major, but I would like to double major in Chemical Engineering.  Should I use this application?
No.  The Cockrell School policy states that students will not be permitted to pursue two engineering majors simultaneously.  However, you should speak with an advisor or faculty member about the possibility of doing research in the other area and/or graduate school.
What's on the application?
The first time you log into the application site, you will be asked to complete the online quiz.  Once you have done so, you may proceed to the application.  It's easy--just select your preferred major and the semester in which you are seeking admission to that major, then click "submit application."  You may repeat this process if you have a second choice in major.  If you're ready, apply here!
I was accepted into Biomedical Engineering, but I changed my mind.  Can I stay in my current major?
Yes.  You are not obligated to accept your admission to the Cockrell School.
What courses should I take before I apply?
The only courses you must complete are those listed above in the "Essential Requirements" section.  For additional courses that fufill engineering requirements, speak with your advisor about the university core curriculum.
