Famous Bridges of the World

Throughout history, bridges have been built using the materials available in the area with increasing technological input into the design.  As more advanced materials such as steel were developed, bridge spans lengthened and more complicated bridges were built.

Examples of bridges with wide spans:

  • Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, Japan (built in 1998) – 1.24 miles (suspension bridge)

  • Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco (built in 1937) - 0.80 miles (suspension bridge)

  • George Washington Bridge, New York (built in 1931) - 0.67 miles (suspension bridge)
