My Experience as a FIG Student

Picture of Jennifer Jackson smiling in front of the UT football fieldThe point of a FIG is to put a group of freshmen students of the same major together so that they can take the same classes and begin to make friends. My freshman year, I was in a WEP FIG and am still becoming friends with the girls I met that first semester of college!

Believe it or not, I actually did not become friends with any of the girls in my FIG during the FIG semester but started to talk to the girls more second semester when I was no longer in the FIG. The girls still ended up in my classes, because we shared the same major, so I still saw them around. We would generally recognize each other from the FIG, reintroduce ourselves, and before I knew it, I had a friend and a study buddy in every class.

During my FIG, many girls formed close friendships, while others (like me) didn’t start to form these until after the FIG was over. Either way, this program helps new students to form friendships and study groups, so that they can get through difficult engineering courses and get a degree!
