Dr. Gary Gabriele, NSF Division Director for the Engineering Education and Centers Division and incoming Dean of the College of Engineering at Villanova University

Gary Gabriele joined NSF in September 2004 as Division Director for the Engineering Education and Centers Division. The Engineering Education and Centers Division has responsibility for directing the Engineering Directorate’s programs in engineering education, human resource development, and research centers.

Previous to coming to NSF, Dr. Gabriele was Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, spent time in the US Army and Lockheed before joining Rensselaer in 1984. He has served as Director of the Core Engineering Program and was Associate Dean of Engineering for Academic and Student Affairs. Dr. Gabriele is also a professor of mechanical engineering in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering, where he has taught courses in design and design optimization. He is a co-founder and teacher in the Product Design and Innovation curriculum, a multidisciplinary design program combining engineering, architecture and science and technology studies. His design course has won national recognition for innovation from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. His research interests fall within the areas of engineering design teaching, multidisciplinary design optimization, and design of integral fasteners. In August, Dr. Gabriele will be leaving NSF to become Dean of the College of Engineering at Villanova University.
