In a three-day retreat last fall, civil engineering's Salvatore Salamone joined other newly tenured UT professors in an experiment to bring together faculty members from different scholarly backgrounds to solve problems in new ways. The best ideas would be funded on the spot by the Office of the Vice President for Research, but there was a catch: You couldn’t partner with someone from your own academic department.
