Our research embraces pressing challenges and drives transformative solutions that benefit society. We transcend traditional boundaries and bridge theory to practice in bringing our discoveries to the world.

Pathways to Impact

  • Lead in core research areas, including the future of energy and sustainability; reinvention of human health; the next generation of manufacturing; and intelligent systems and human-machine symbiosis
  • Create and support seed funds to help launch new projects and initiatives
  • Form and expand interdisciplinary research centers that cross boundaries and engage a variety of partners
  • Develop new ways to encourage faculty and students to commercialize discoveries
  • Anticipate and prepare for future research opportunities in emerging areas

Kickoff 23-24: Progress and Updates

Southeast Texas Urban Integrated Field Lab

Texas Engineers are leading a team of four universities studying the risks and impacts of flooding and air pollution related to climate change in a fast-growing part of Southeast Texas that is emblematic of other communities along the Gulf Coast. The Southeast Texas Urban Integrated Field Lab is focused on the Beaumont-Port Arthur region, and its goals are to better understand projected climate change impacts across Southeast Texas, which will inform other regions and improve resilience in these communities.

Brains + Machines

A mind-controlled wheelchair for people with motor disabilities developed by Cockrell School engineers is an important step forward for brain-machine interfaces — computer systems that turn thoughts into action. In recent studies, three individuals with tetraplegia, the inability to move their arms and legs due to spinal injuries, operated the wheelchair in a cluttered, natural environment.

Texas Innovation Center

A collaboration between the Cockrell School and College of Natural Sciences, the Texas Innovation Center is the hub for bringing engineering and science discoveries to the market. In addition to offering commercialization support, co-working space and wet lab facilities, the center helps connect UT entrepreneurs with startup incubators, accelerators, mentors and investors.

Find your place in the plan

We need faculty and staff to step up and become Pathway Leaders for the plan. And we want to tell the stories of the many courageous engineers in our community. Know one? Reach out and tell us about them.
